Q and A from the Austrialia Mint....... by John Veltmeijer, Australia Being only one of three members in Australia, I thought it best that I take the initiative and telephone The Royal Australian Mint and ask them for information regarding future Bi-metallic issues. I managed to speak with the person who has had alot to do with producing the Australia $5 Bi-metallic Coin, his name is Sam. He was very helpful while answering all my questions in the short time we had. (It was a long distance phone call) Here are some of the Q & A from our conversation. Q: What is planned by the RAM for future Bi-metallic Coins? A: The $5 Bi-metallic Coin is not a circulating coin, although it is legal tender, it is classified as a Commemorative/Collectable Coin with a face value of $5.00 The RAM has determined it to be a bi-annual issue (Issued only once every two years) so this means that the next issue will be in the Year 2000. Q: Does the pressing machine at the RAM produce the whole finished coin? A: Not always, in most cases we use a pre-assembled blank and just press the inscription and pattern/effigy onto it Q: When did the RAM first start producing Bi-metallic Coins? A: The Mint has experimented with Bi-metallic technology since 1990, assembling Bi-metallic blanks from supplied components on our large Verson Press. These blanks were later used in the visitor gallery presses where tourists to the Mint could make their own Bi-metallic souvenir token. The first $5 Bi-metallic Coin was struck in 1994 on a pre-assembled blank. Each blank is made from an outer ring of austenitic Stainless Steel and an inner plug of Aluminium Bronze, they weigh 10.6 grams and the diameter is 28.12mm Q: Has the Mint any of the tokens left over that we might be able to acquire for our Members overseas. A: Yes. We still have a number of the Welcome to Canberra Tokens available but are only available in bags of 50 tokens for $100 So, for all you members out there that haven't got one of these Bi-metallic tokens, send me a message (johnv@networkdata.com.au), the token will cost you $2.00US incl postage (airmail but no insurance/registration) and don't forget to help Martin by submitting articles for OUR WBCC Newsmail 4. Bi-metallic San Marino 500 and 1000 1998.......by Martin Peeters The following I could read in San Marino's Philatelic & Numismatic Bulletin of August 1998: --Quote A new series of divisional money, Man and Science It is necessary to know the past if we are to build a better future: that is the concept which guides and unites the last Sammarinese divisional money series of the twentieth century. It is a summary of human activity told through the most significant moments, utterances and personalities, that may well stimulate the people of the third millenium to achieve new heights of knowledge, progress and civilisation. After Philosophy and the Arts it is the turn of Science, which with speculation and research is the means by which humans seek to understand the world and its laws, based on study, application and experience. There are so many disciplines that.mark the way to human understanding that it has been necessary to reduce them into the eight areas that carry most weight on the threshold of the third millenium. (....) The theme of the Bi-metallic 500 lire is Chemistry, the science which, through the study of the elements permits mankind to use them correctly and guides scientists in the ways of transforming their nature. (....) Geology is the subject of the new Bi-metallic 1000 lire, the science which studies the Earth and thereby becomes the key to understanding the history of life and humankind, both past and future. --Unquote You can see a picture of both Bi-metallic San Marino's 500 and 1000 Lire 1998 in the WBCC Homepage: http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html. Coin world article (2)..............by Martin Peeters, Netherlands The following article I could read in US coinpaper Coin World of october 12, 1998: --Quote Nobel winner. subject of circulating commem Komad Lorenz, Nobel laureate in medicine, appeats on the 1998 circulating ringed Bi-metallic commemorative 50-schilling coin of Austria to be released Oct.14. The coin is issued annually with a different obverse desiga. It has a gold color copper-aluminumnickel ring and silver color copper nickel or Magnimat 7 center. The coin has a diameter of 26.5 millimeters, has magnetic properties and is struck by the Austrian Mint. The Mint will offer 100,000 Uncirculated coins in special packaging to collectors and strike an additional 1.2 million coins struck for circulation. The reverse depicts the bust of Lorenz facing three quarters right with three greylag geese (whose behavior was meticulously researched by Lorenz) at right facing left. The legend 25 JAHRE NOBELPREIS KONRAD LORENZ 1973 1998 (25th anniversary of the Nobel Prize won by Lorenz) appears about the circumference on the outer ring. As in past years, the obverse depicts the face value at center with the shields of the nine Austrian provinces about it and an outer circumference legend readIng REPUBLIK OSTERREICH SCHILLING. Lorenz received the Nobel Prize in 1973 for his pioneering studies of human and animal behavior. Co- recipients ot the award were Karl Von Frisch and Nikolaas Tinbergen: Lorenz held doctorates in medicine, zoology and psychology. As a child he had fish, dogs, monkeys, insects, ducks and geese as pets. His views on animal behavior were controversial. He was accused of being a Nazi sympathizer. He apologized for a 1940 publication judged to reflect Nazi views of science, when he received the Nobel Prize. In 1966 Lorenz published a controversial work called On Aggression in which he asserted aggressive impulses draw on analogies between human and animal behavior. The annual ringed Bi-metallic circulating 50schilling coin was introduced in 1996 as "an opportunity to familiarize the Austrian public with this new type of coin" also planned for euro-denominated coins beginning in 2002. (.....) Ordering information for the 1998 coin was not announced at press time. The coins are to be sold in collector blister packs through the Mint retail store in Vienna. The Austrian Mint can be contacted at am Hewnarkt 1, A-1031 Vienna (Wien), Austria. The fax number is (431) 715-4070 and the e-mail address is Marketing@austrian-mint.at. © --Unquote "See" you next week and happy collecting, Martin Peeters, Focal Point of the Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club martinp@westbrabant.net or martinp@concepts.nl -------------------------------------------------------------- The Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club has been established September 14, 1996 and is the very first Worldwide Collectors Club using the Internet.
