WBCC Newsmail 128, Volume 4, January 23, 1999 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Composed with help from members of the Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club (WBCC) and weekly published by Martin Peeters, Netherlands, Focal Point of the WBCC, martinp@westbrabant.net -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear WBCC members, This was a most quiet week regarding Bi-metallics. Still there is someting to report, so enjoy reading this weeks WBCC Newsmail !! 1. Bi-metallic Canada 2 Dollars 1996....by Frans Woons, Canada I have encountered, in person and through photographs, several particular misstrikes of the Canadian Bi-metallic $ 2 coin. In this misstrike, the >heart of the coin is off-centre. I think, and I am not sure, that this error is caused by the central disk not being completely within the ring, but resting partially on top of it, just before the coin is struck. This results in a coin of which, on one side, part of the yellow centre is found in the white ring. This portion is moon-shaped. here is too much yellow on that side of the coin. On the other side of the coin, to compensate for that, there is not enough yellow. On that side, part of the coin's image, that is ussually found in the yellow, is now found in the white. On most of this type of error you'll find the yellow surplus on the obverse of the coin (the side with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II). The yellow moon-shaped piece is usually the widest near the H in ELIZABETH. (Near the 10:30 position; 1.5 hours before 12). I am not sure why this is so. Maybe because of the set-up of the feeding mechanism and the position of the dies in the coin press. The other day I received some images of this type of misstrike in which the moon-shaped piece is on the REVERSE. The widest point of the piece is now found between de D and A of CANADA. (Near the 1:30 position; 1.5 hours AFTER 12). Maybe this is because in that case, just before being struck, the ring was resting on top of the centre while the centre was not completely within the ring. You can see a scan of this misstrike in the WBCC homepage http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html. 2.
