Article in Spanish coinpaper (2)........by Jose Ramirez, Spain In Spanish coin magazine Cronica Numismatica of February 1999 in the section Opinion, I could read the following: --Quote Euros, un fallo tecnico. (this is the Spanish title) Euros, a tecnical failure. Author: Carlos Castán, Professional Numismatic. The new European monetary system, the Euro, will become the best economic copy since Roman and Carlo Magno Empires. But it leaves a lot to be desired, the currency will to impose, but never put and least to accept when the people not desire it. The Euro, a perfect copy of the antiquity, will be born lane as the citizens, even not issued, to begin doing a missing piece that is the most useful piece in the daily business deal. A coin, with a face value, that the german technocrat were decided that this is "not advisable". I refer to the metallic coin with a value of 5 Euro. We know the design of the note of this value, this note will be the substitute of the metal. But will not maybe the same, a metallic coin will not be changed for a note. All Europe are accustomed to the use of the metallic coin with a high face value, and our personal advice is a piece with this characteristics: value 5 Euros, bimetallic of silver and bronze, weight 22 grams, 36 milimeters of diameter and 15 stars in the edge. The silver in the coin will be serve to reinforce the faith in this metal that since twenty centuries have be a refuge of adversitys and safeguard of the monetary inflation. The change of the 5 Euros of paper to a metal coin will reinforce the good use of the currency, will help to a bigger duration of this piece, that the average live of the metallic coin are twenty years than the two years of a note. The production costs, the deterioration and others elements give a great advantage to the metallic currency in opossite to the paper currency. Actually, several European countries have in their currencies pieces of high face value: Spain, with 500 and 2000 pesetas pieces; Portugal, 500 and 1000 escudos; France, 20 an 100 francs, Italy ,10000 liras; Great Britain, 2 and 5 pounds; Germany, 5 and 10 marks; Nederland, 10 gulden; Belgium, 500 francs; Austria 500 schillings.... This countries have metallics coin with a face value bigger than 5 Euros. For this reason and others more, this value would be issued but in a metallic format. You will see as this valor will be the most used for the european citizens. --Unquote --Remark Jose Raminez: The value of the metallic coin of 500 pesetas are 3 Euros and the value of the smallest note of 1000 pesetas are 6 Euros. I propose that the european members think and apply this to his national currency. 8.
