Bi-metallic from the Netherlands...by Frans Dubois, Netherlands In about 2 or 3 weeks there will be again a new bimetallic token from the Netherlands. A token from recreation centre 'De Bonte Wever' in the Dutch City Slagharen. The token will be used at the wellknown (in the Netherlands) recreation centre 'De Bonte Wever' in Slagharen. People who spend there vacation-trip or their 'short-break' can use the token as a consumption token to pay at the centre in the restaurant or bar. As soon as the token is available you can see it in the WBCC Homepage. If you need more info, please contact dubois.f@wxs.nl 4. Bi-metallic from Saudi Arabia...by Joel Anderson, USA I do not recall if you have reported it or not, but I got word from my correspondent in Saudi Arabia that a new Bi-metallic 1 Riyal coin has been released. It is available in both Proof and Unc, but do not have much in the way of details yet. 5. Chicago International Coin Fair April 1999......by Kyle Mutcher, Canada Last weekend I had a great time at the Chicago International Coin Fair. I managed to find some coins that I was missing, met some great dealers that make a special effort in relation to Bi-metallic coins, posed for some pictures with Bi-metallic coins that might appear in future edition of World Coin News and learned some new info about Russian Bi-metallics. Dealers Al Beck, Al Boulanger, and Allan Berman were all great sources of Bi-metallics. They made looking for coins a joy by having a great displays of their stock and making special effort to have Bi-metallic coins easy to look at, often having them in their own section. Al Beck specializes in world coins with animals and along with that, bimetal coins. He had a whole book devoted to Bi-metallics sorted by country. Allan Berman strives to have the most current foreign coins available and also specializes in ancient and medieval coins. He often has newly released coins, some of which have barely reached collectors in their home countries. Al Boulanger had a quite impressive stock of Bi-metallic material also, this is where I found many of the coins that I bought at the show. I'll include the addresses for all of the dealers at the end of the letter so that you can contact them for lists of coins. Alexander Basok had many examples of error Russian Bi-metallic coins, and most exciting of all he has some examples of the 1993 error 50 Ruble coin in sets for sale. He was able to purchaise the last six known from the Russian mint. He says that the error occurred when the previously high quality manufactured Bimetallic blanks (meant for use in 1992) were used with the die intended for unimetal 50R (1993). He suspects that these sets were made early in 1993. Along with the error 50R he has a beautiful collection of production error Russian Bi-metallic coins. He has several that have the overlapping, and a center struck with out a ring present. Some of these are for sale but some of the more spectacular errors are in his private collection. He has a 50R that has a sliver of the cupro-nickel from the ring struck into the brass center, an interesting looking piece. He is interested in selling this piece. You can contact him at his address below. I hope I sent the pics of all the error coins in time to be included on the web page for this week but if not check back soon to see them. Well last but not least, I was making my final few purchases on Sunday afternoon, when I was approached by Maureen Woon, a reporter from World Coin news. We talked a little about the show and collecting and of course a little bit about Bi-metallics so watch the Coin World paper for a mention of the WBCC once again or maybe even a picture of me looking at some of Al Beck's Bi-metallic book. A news/advertising item in the British magazine for the Electronics trade "Electronics Weekly", issue of 14th April 1999, says a little about one of the firms behind the firms who make coin comparitor/acceptor mechanisms. Particular reference being made to mechanisms for the bi-metallic British 2 Pounds coins. --Quote £2 or not £2 ?... Fraud prevention on the £2 coin is being helped by micro-ohmmeters from Cropico. The bi-colour coins offer greater security than standard coins because of the presence of two metals. Cropico is working with leading manufacturers of automatic payment machines to ensure they can accurately measure resistance between the metals, even on the embossed coins. --Unquote 7.
