World's Baththub Racing Capital Honours Volenteers
NANAIMO, BC – The Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society (LNBS) is pleased to
announce that their 2001 municipal trade token will salute the International
Year of Volunteers on its circulating bimetallic 3-Dollar token.  The token
will have currency value, at participating  merchants, until September 30.
The LNBS has been issuing such tokens as a means to raise funds for their
community projects since 1969 and this is its second bimetallic 3-Dollar
token.  “Volunteers are not only key to our Society  but they make the World
a better place to live in, and for that we owe them a tremendous debt of
gratitude” said Margaret Jonhson, the program coordinator.

Produced by  Eligi Consultants Inc., a company specialized in municipal
trade tokens, the 32-millimetre token has a heart of silver-coloured
cupro-nickel (20mm in diameter) surrounded by a ring of gold-coloured
aluminium-bronze and is a whopping 3 millimetre thick. “It looks absolutely
fabulous and is bound to be very popular with tourists as well as the local
population” commented Serge Pelletier, President of Eligi Consultants Inc.
A very limited edition three-token Collector Set (only 100) will also be
available.  The set, presented in a CD like jewel box, will contain three
metal varieties: bimetallic, argentan and gold plated.

Those interested in getting some of these tokens should contact the
exclusive distributor:  Bonavita Ltd, Box 11447, Station
H, Nepean, ON K2H 7V1 (Tel: +1-613-823-3844 / Fax: +1-613-825-3092).

Backgroundrounder
NANAIMO (BRITISH COLUMBIA) — 3 DOLLARS 2001
Nanaimo harbor was the scene of a bathtub race extravaganza at the first
race in 1967. As the City of NANAIMO’s “Centennial Event” that year, close
to 200 tubbers entered the fun competition and amazingly, 47 completed the
36 mile course to Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Cove across the straits of
Georgia. Now the “Great Race” finishes at Departure Bay in Nanaimo covering
a very grueling course that leaves Nanaimo harbor circles Entrance Island
and then up to and around Winchelsea Island and then back to Departure Bay
in Nanaimo. In the early days it was indeed a challenge to get past the
starting line in the choppy confusion caused by an extra 785 small and large
observation and escort  boats in Nanaimo harbor. From the confusion of a
first time bathtub race 34 years ago, the Nanaimo to Nanaimo “Great”
INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BATHTUB RACE & 4 day Nanaimo Marine
Festival has evolved. Where once a select band of tubbers were the highlight
they now share the spotlight with many other land and water events which are
interesting and often spectacular to watch.

The Nanaimo Marine Festival’s salute in the year 2001 is to the
“INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF VOLUNTEERS” which will also be the theme for the
“Spirit of Tubbing” competition as well as the “Sailpast on Wheels Fun
Parade” held on the Saturday of Bathtub Weekend. Kicking things off is a fun
competition taking place June 26 is the Tubbin Time Tonic contest where
local “Mixologist” from all the pubs and licensed establishments in Nanaimo
are encouraged to enter their secret recipe to be judged and hope to have
their drink become the “Official Cocktail” of the 2001 Nanaimo Marine
Festival. To begin July, “Bathtub Race Month” the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of
Commerce sponsors a fun competition the “Spirit of Tubbing Awards” which
encourages the entire business community to get in the “Bathtub Spirit” by
decorating their businesses in the Marine Festival theme and having their
staff dress in the “Official” Bathtub Race T-shirts. Judging takes place
mid-month and awards for different categories are handed out during the
Marine Festival week and proudly displayed. Then the momentum carries on to
Saturday, July 14th the crowning of the Miss Nanaimo Ambassador at the Miss
Nanaimo Pageant which takes place in the evening at Beban Park auditorium.
Miss Nanaimo and her court will then be officially crowned Mermaid Royalty
to reign over all the festivities during the Marine Festival. On Wednesday
July 18th another annual event is the unveiling and cutting of the
“Official” Nanaimo Marine Festival Cake baked by Overwaitea Foods at Country
Club Centre at 10:30 am. The monstrous cake is sponsored by Overwaitea Foods
and the Pepsi Cola Bottling Group and samples of both the cake and Pepsi are
offered afterwards.

The “Official” start to the 4 day Nanaimo Marine Festival kicks off on
Thursday, July 19th with the opening of the LNBS Marine Festival Food Fare,
Kiddies Harborside Playlot, Shoppers Drug Mart Children’s Village, Kiddies
Karnival, Tim Hortons Marine Festival Entertainment Stage and the Thrifty
Foods, Avalon Cinemas & Costco children’s programs at Maffeo Sutton and
Swy-a-lana Lagoon parks adjacent to Nanaimo harbor. Then the Nanaimo City
Centre Association (NCCA) unveils it’s 3 day “Bathtub Street Fair” that they
sponsor and organize in downtown Nanaimo with lots of zany fun events
including the Bank Managers Tricycle races, Egg Toss Contest and the LNBS
World Championship Waiters Race jointly sponsored by Molson Breweries and
Pepsi Cola Bottling Group. On Saturday, July 21st at 10:30 am the annual
LNBS Sailpast on Wheels Fun Parade takes place through the city center
followed by the NCCA sponsored Bathtub Street Fair events downtown and at
Swy-a-lana Lagoon & Maffeo Sutton Parks the Marine Festival Food Fare, the
Kiddies Harborside Playlot, the SPCA Pet Parade, Shoppers Drug Mart
Children’s Village, Tim Hortons Marine Festival Entertainment Stage, the
Kiddies Karnival along with the Thrifty Foods, Avalon Cinemas & Costco
children’s programs, the Hornets Rugby club’s Bavarian Garden & Bikini
Contest held behind the Civic Arena and in the harbor the World’s Sabot
Sailboat Races. Then in the evening to start things off is the traditional
“Sacrifice to the Bathtub Gods” boat burning ceremony and then Vancouver
Islands priemier fireworks display the spectacular “Quality Foods” Festival
of Lights & Music fireworks display take place in the Nanaimo harbor at
dusk.

The “Great Race” day starts off with the Canadian Scottish “Pancake
Breakfast” adjacent to the Civic arena at 7:00 am and then get ready for the
9:00 am “Quality Foods” Kid’s Treasure Hunt” held in the Harborside Playlot
adjacent to Swy-a-lana Lagoon with prizes galore for three separate age
categories. Then join the thousands of excited people at the “Quality Foods
START LINE” as the 35th annual “Great” INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
BATHTUB RACE which starts at 11:00 am sharp in Nanaimo harbor for the
approximate 1 1/2 hour challenge in the straits of Georgia to the
“Overwaitea FINISH LINE” at Departure Bay. A shuttle bus service to both the
start & finish line also sponsored by Nanaimo Regional Transit is available
at all pickup areas. After the tubs leave the excitement continues both on
land and in the water with the Marine Festival Food Fare, the Kiddies
Karnival, Shoppers Drug Mart Children’s Village, Harborside Playlot, Thrifty
Foods & Avalon Cinemas children’s programs, “Family Fun for Everyone” in the
park, lagoon and on the beautiful Nanaimo waterfront and in the harbor. If
you prefer (and remember you can do both) you can join us at the always
spectacular “Overwaitea FINISH LINE” at Departure Bay beach with Corporate
Sponsors refreshment and amusement booths along with the Hornets Rugby Club
Bavarian Gardens.

Four full days of fun and activities for the young, old and in between,
family oriented and held in NANAIMO, the Sun-porch of Canada, the Jewel of
the West and the Bathtub Racing Capital of the World, during the always
sunny month of July. So come join us in Nanaimo, July 19th to July 22nd,
2001 and take in the world’s cleanest sport, Bathtub Racing and the 35th
running of the “Great” INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BATHTUB RACE &
Nanaimo Marine Festival and another bonus most of the events and activities
are FREE.
