3. Bi-metallic news from Gibraltar......Paul Baker, UK
The other day I found the page....
http://www.gibraltar.gov.gi/latest_news/official_notices/2004/48-2004.htm
It is an official notice, from the Gibraltan government, dated 11th August
2004, on the subject of the "Issue of Tercentenary Currency Notes and Coins"
for Gibraltar. Included in the notice is the design theme for each of the
new series of circulation coins (1p to the Bi-metallic 2 Pounds) about to
be introduced as commemoration of the tercentenary of Gibraltar. The theme
for the Bi-metallic 2 Pound coin is said to be "The capture of Gibraltar
- 1704", more recent events from Gibraltar history are remembered on some
of the other denominations of this new series, all reverse designs are changed.
Starting this year a new mint is producing all of Gibraltar's coins, Tower
Mint has taken over this task from the Pobjoy Mint. The Gibraltan crowns
as yet issued this year and made by Tower Mint have (as far as I know) all
included a reletively new portrait of the Queen Elizabeth II as designed
by Raphael David Maklouf. (This portrait was used on some Golden Jubilee
medallions etc of 2002 that Tower Mint produced). So it is quite possible
that there will be a change of portrait on the circulation coins. Gibraltar's
circulation coins just might see other changes (size materials) with the
start of this new minting contract but I would not think it too likely.
This reminds me - I have a Bi-metallic Gibraltan 2 Pounds coins of 2002 and
I have Gibraltan 1 Pound of 2003. But can anyone confirm the existence of
a 2003 dated Gibraltan Bi-metallic 2 Pounds coin and the design on it. Perhaps
someone has a 2003 dated mint set - if those exist. Any comments ?
Whilst Pobjoy Mint were making the coins of Gibrlatar, the circulation coins
(almost) all included both a mint mark "PM" and dieletters e.g. "AA". These
will no doubt disappear but I wonder if Tower Mint will use any form of mint
mark ? Who can find these new coins ? If they are not out already - they
are sure to start appearing in the next few weeks.

Looking for new bimetallics on Ebay I found this Euro test set from:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3934544942&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
Russia:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3934544238&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
Only we can see the folders but I think that this set contains the 1 and
2 Bi-metallic coins.
My question is: Who will be the next country to issue this "coins"?
You can see several images and data about the others Euro fantasies test
