9. Bi-metallic Quiz Game #768…by Jack Hepler, USA

She fell in love with insurgent Andrés Quintana Roo, but was forbidden by her family to marry him. She collaborated with the insurgents and together she and Quintana Roo relayed messages, assisted fugitives and contributed money and medicine. She was the only civilian woman in Mexico to ever receive a state funeral. She is known to the Mexican people as Benemerita y Dulcisima Madre de la Patria ("Sweet Mother of the Fatherland"). Her image appears on a Bi-metallic 5 Pesos. Name this Mexican patriot.

Answer to Bi-metallic Quiz Game question #767

There is a monument in the Congress of Mexico of a Mexican physician and liberal politician. In 1879 he went to Paris where he studied medicine. In 1889 he returned to Mexico. He served as senator and gave a memorable speech in the Congress against the dictator Victoriano Huerta, for which he was murdered. His image may be found on a 2009 Bi-metallic 5 Pesos.
