3. Bi-metallic Token from Italy….by Rod Sell, Australia
Received the following E-mail with picture from Patrick Foley
I happened upon your website, which I find quite interesting even though I do not specialize in bi-metallic coins/tokens, and thought I would send the attached photo.
I always ask any family members or friends who travel outside the USA, to please bring me back coins from any countries the visit.
When they would get back home they would give me a handful of coins and I would add them to a container I used for world coins.
At least 10-15 years ago I was going through the container to determine what countries were represented and I found what, at first, looked like a 500 Lire bi-metallic coin from Italy.
There were a few 500L coins which I stacked up That's when I noticed one was different. Upon closer inspection, I found is was a fake/counterfeit/manipulated coin.
It was a 1940 2L Italian coin with a 50 centimes French coin embedded in the reverse of the 2L. The 50-centimes coin does not show on both sides, just the reverse.
The 50-centimes used was only made for a couple of years during the 1930s. I happen to have a 1932 in my collection.
I've never seen one like it anywhere on the internet. In the past I have searched many websites looking for one, but no luck so far.
I suppose it could have been a one-time endeavor by someone, I guess in Italy.
Just though I would share the photo with your members.
