WBCC Newsmail 94, Vol. 3, May 30, 1998 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Composed with help of members of the Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club and published by Martin Peeters, The Netherlands, Focal Point of the WBCC, martinp@concepts.nl or martinp@westbrabant.net -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear WBCC members, After a week celebrating (for the 100th WBCC member) I had some time left to compose this weeks WBCC Newsmail. I hope you will enjoy reading it !! 1. A new member..............by Martin Peeters, WBCC Focal Point We have a new member. Let me introduce him to you: Name: Bill Webster (WBCC member #101), USA E-mail: bwebster@webtv.net Age: 45 Hobbies: Magic and pyrotechnics Against: Child and animal abuse Goals: To get more involved with my son's school and to help the local volenteer animal rescue groups 2. My new E-mail address..............by Massimiliano Aiello, Italy Finally I have the definitive E-mail address, Massimiliano Aiello (WBCC member #73) biribau@tin.it 3. Bi-metallic 10 Euro 1998, Maarten Tromp..by Martin Peeters, Netherlands Refering to WBCC Newsmail 88, item 4, the Bi-metallic 10 Euro 1998 Maarten Tromp, is struck in 2 varieties. One with a tiny word "METAL" above the "O" of the word "EURO" and with a Silvermark (a Sword) above the wing of the depicted Bird. And one without those 2 special marks. When you look into the WBCC Homepage ( http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html ) you can clearly see the differences. I could obtain a piece from a foreign (outside the Netherlands) coindealer, there are indeed 2 different types. The coindealer had the Bi-metallic 10 Euro 1998 Maarten Tromp without the mentioned marks. From a spokesman of the Dutch Mint I've got the information why there is a difference in the Euro's sold in the Netherlands and in other countries: A. It is by the Dutch Law that a Silvermark is on a coin/medal, sold in the Netherlands when it contains Silver. When a Dutch coin/medal is sold in other countries the Dutch Silvermark is not excepted as official Silvermark. B. The earlier struck and sold in the Netherlands Bi-metallic 10 Euro 1997, Johan Oldenbarnevelt, also containing Silver, has the word "METAL" on the reverse above the flag of the Ship, and the Silvermark in the reverse under "A" of the word "JOHAN". So this 10 Euro sold also outside the Netherlands are without these marks. Maybe one of the WBCC members has ordered it from a foreign coindealer and can confirm this? 4. Bi-metallic 20 Diners Andorra.......by Massimiliano Aiello, Italy I received from "Servei d'Emissions Episcopal" of Andorra the brochure about the new Bi-metallic 20 Diners (Gold and Silver) issued for the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The coin is composed of a silver ring (Ag 925 - 25 g) and of a gold center (Au 917 - 1,5 g). The diameter is 38 mm. Condition: BU. Issue: 5.000 pieces. The price is 11.000 Ptas + 700 Ptas for despatch. 5. French Bi-metallic MTT Euros..........by Frans Dubois, Netherlands It is really getting out of control with the amount of French Bi-metallic MTT (Municipal Trade Tokens) Euros. Further several Bi-metallic commemoratives 2 Euro's regarding Alphone Daudet the following Bi-metallic serie: City Ales, Allevard, Barbentane, Beaucaire, Champrosay, Chateau du Pape, Cucugnan, Fonviulle, Lamalcu les Bains, St. Michel de Frigolet, Tarascon and the 20 Euro of Nimes. Bi-metallic City MTT'.by Rainer Barthel (non WBCC member), Germany The german city "Osnabrueck" is issuing 2 Bi-metallic Euros and one in Silver. The two Bi-metallics have a denomination of 5 Euros each. The were valid from the April 18 to May 3, 1998 as legal tender. I assume they are dated 1998. 8. An encased Canadian Voyager Dollar...by Rod Sell, Australia The story below relates to the encased pieces in the Canadian Voyager dollars as per the item in the WBCC Homepage ( http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html ). The items were made by Kelly Finnegan of Salt Lake City, Utah. --Quote I made an Encased Canadian Voyager dollars in 1988 because I really like the Voyageur design, and couldn't believe the Canadian government would replace it with the "Loon" design. I made 52, because they struck the voyageur dollar for 52 years. I have some friends with a coining press, and I designed the dies, they engraved them, and we bored out the dollars, inserted the cents, and locked them into place on the coin press. I numbered them on the die so that the punch wouldn't go through the other side. I hope this information will be helpful. Thanks, Kelly --Unquote Kellys E-mail address is: tcaras@inet-1.com 9. Bi-metallic future 2002 1 and 2 Euro Netherlands..by Martin Peeters Directly from the Dutch Mint I've got the pictures of the final designs of the Dutch future 2002 Bi-metallic 1 and 2 Euro. They both depict the Dutch Queen Beatrice. When you look into the WBCC Homepage ( http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html ) you will find the pictures. 10. Bi-metallic Andorra 20 Dinar 1998.......by Martin Peeters, Netherlands Refering to WBCC Newsmail 92, item 5, about the Andorra 10 different Bi-metallic 20 Dinar 1998, I've got from MDM the following message: --Quote Today you get more information of our advertisement in the MDM Journal (*about the Andorra 20 Dinars 1998). The whole set cost 1950,00 DM, each coin 195,00 DM. The complete set isn´t available, because the time of issue is different. All coins are Legal Tender. We don´t know exactly, what do you mean with ringed or inlay. All coins consist of different metals: silver and gold. If you have further questions, please contact us again. Thank you. We are sure, that you will get an early reply. Sincerely Yours, MDM Munzenhandelsgesellschaft mbH Deutsche Munze Customer Service, Gunhild Bentlage, E-mail: BENTLAGE@mdm.de --Unquote * údded by WBCC Focal Point 11. My favorite Bi-metallic.........by Cliff Anderson, USA My favorite Bi-metallic in the 1968 Delaware Memorial Bridge token for its sheer artistry, perspective, and the balanced detail of the two state seals on the reverse. But others are intriguing: I think the Metro-Dade County token is attractive for its detail of an urban scene with people in it; France's 20 franc Tri-metallic, with its well proportioned and detailed Mont St. Michel, is powerful; and the WBCC token is great. I would suggest that the best Bi-metal portraiture goes to Ireland's 1995 5 Ecu with St. Patrick or the 1995 Europa Beethoven. 12. Store/protect coins.....by Bill Webster, USA I would be most interested in hearing from other collectors on how they store/protect their coins. (not counting those ugly PVC flips or pages!). E-mail: bwebster@webtv.net 13. Coin World article..........by Martin Peeters, Netherlands In US Coinpaper Coin World, edition May 4, 1998, I could read the following about the new Italian Bi-metallic 1000 Lire 1997, with the correct Map of Europe: --Quote Italy makes corrections to `map' coin. The map of Europe is being redrawn again. No, it isn't a repeat of the action the Congress of Vienna took followirìg the Napoleonic wars, nor is it part of the plans by the European Union. Italy has issued a second variety of its now well-known (*Bi-metallic) 1997 1,000-lira coin with a corrected depiction of the map of Europe on the reverse. Only experts examining the coin will know if the Instituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (Italian State Mint) got it right or not the second time around. Many of the central European countries whose borders were drawn incorrectly on the first variety of the coin appear to have been depicted correctly. The reverse of the recently released corrected map coin depicts Denmark separate from Germany, while showing the borders of the Netherlands and Belgium as independent states. What was East Germany now appears correctly as part of Germany on the new variety. The Czech Repablic and Republic of Slovakia still appear to be shown together as former Czechoslovakia. Luxembourg is still ignored on the map on the coin. Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club member Gerhard Schon is quoted in the WBCC newsletter as saying the corrected variety "appears to be much scarcer than the error coin". The Italian State Mint initially announced an issue of about 180 million coins for circulation, but only an estimated 30 million pieces reached Italian banks before the error map version of the coin was withdrawn. The coin has an aluminum-nickel-bronze ring with an iron-chromium center. The obverse depicts the turreted personification of Italia facing left with 12 stars and PEPUBBLICA ITALIANA about the circumference. The 12 stars represent the original 12 members of the European Union. The reverse map is meant to illustrate the original 12 member states of the European Union, although several of these states are only partially shown due to a scroll design superimposed on the map. Ordering information regarding the corrected map variety of the coin was not immediately available. © CW. --Unquote * ÿAdded by WBCC Focal Point 14. Bi-metallic Belgium Gaming Tokens...by Martin Peeters In this weeks send WBCC Newsflash-5, about the 4 different pieces of the Belgium Bi-metallic Gaming Tokens, the 4 sets I had were gone in one day!!
