Article.........................by Martin Peeters, Netherlands In US Coin World weekly magazine of May 25, 1998, I could read the following article: --Quote Ecuador issues circulating commemorative coins Ecuador appears to have solved one of the problems argued by many countries regarding·circulating commemorative coinshow to issue them without confusing the public. Three base metal composition circulating 1997 coins mark the 70th anniversary of the Banco Central del Ecuador or Ecuador Central Bank in a discreet way that will probably go unnoticed by much of the general public. The coins are similar to the circulating coins of 1995 and 1996, but the legends on the coins have been changed to mark the anniversary In addition, two 1995 coins are also circúlating commemoratives, marking anniversaries within the obverse legends. The coins involved are composed of a bronze-plated steel center with a nickel-plated steel outer ring. They are the 18 millimeter 100 sucres and 2l mm 500 sucres. With the 1996 24mm 1,000 sucres composed of the same metals, the three are the only coin denominations now in circulation in that South American country. The 500 and I,000 sucres each have the Mint mark for the Santiago Mint. Liberator and General Antonio Jose de Sucre appears facing left on the obverse of the 100-sucre coin, but the legend BICENTENARIO NATALICIO appearing On the 1995 coins has been replaced with a legend reading BANCO CENTRAL DEL ECUADOR 1927-1997. The facing bust of Isadro Ayora on the obverse of the 1995 500 sucres accompanies a legend readlng REFORMA DEL ESTADO. The 1997 coin has the same legend as does the 100 sucres. The BANCO DEL CENTRAL Ecuador legend on the 1997 1,000-sucre coin is the same as on lower denominations. The coin of 1996 simply presents the denomination. Both coins depict the bust of Eugenio Espejo. The reverse of all coins of both years depicts a coat of arms; with date below and legend REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR about the circumference. Paper money in current use comprises the 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50;000 sucres denomations. The 1,000 sucre is being replaced by the coin of the same denomination.
